Feral / Stray Cats

Trap, Neuter, Return of outside cats!

Before deciding to go and trap an outside cat, attend a free Trap, Neuter, Return Workshop run by the San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition (SAFCC). This is for your safety and the safety of the vet techs that you will be working with to get the cats sterilized. You must know what you are doing before you start such a project and this will be safer for the cats too.

By attending a workshop, you will be able to book the discounted spay/neuter surgeries for the outside cats. You will also be able to borrow traps free of charge.

Go to the SAFCC website to see dates and times of the workshops.

Workshops are sometimes subject to change so check with SAFCC to confirm your chosen workshop has not changed by sending an email or leave a message on the Helpline (210-877-9067).

IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN DEALING WITH OUTSIDE CATS

  • ALWAYS use a humane trap to catch an outside cat or kitten
  • ALWAYS deliver the cat to the clinic in a humane trap (one cat per trap)
  • ALWAYS keep the trap covered at all times with a light sheet or towel to minimize stress
  • ALWAYS keep a trapped cat in a safe, climate controlled place
  • ALWAYS check the doors of the trap are securely fastened before transport (you might have to use twist ties for added security)
  • ALWAYS mark the trap with your name, contact information and the name of the cat (write this info on masking tape that sticks to the top of the trap)

  • DO NOT catch, push or entice an outside cat into a carrier or pet taxi
  • DO NOT try to pick up an outside cat even if it will allow you to pet it while it is feeding
  • DO NOT leave a set trap unattended
  • DO NOT leave a trapped cat outside
  • DO NOT try to pet the cat
  • DO NOT transfer the cat out of a trap into any other container/cage/carrier/pet taxi
  • DO NOT transport the trapped cat in an open-bed truck

To save yourselves time at the SpaySA clinic, download the intake form from the website and fill out the details beforehand.
